Anglerfish
Anglerfish are known for their unusual method of reproduction. The males, much smaller than the females, are equipped with special receptors to find a female in the vast ocean. Once they find a female, they bite onto her body and release an enzyme that dissolves their mouth and body, permanently fusing the two organisms. This fusion allows the male to provide a continuous supply of sperm to the female, ensuring fertilization of her eggs.
Honeybees
The honeybee mating ritual involves a queen bee mating with up to 20 male bees, or drones, in mid-air on a mating flight. During the brief mating process, the male honeybee’s genitalia will forcefully detach from its abdomen and remain in the queen bee’s reproductive tract. This detachment results in the death of the male. It ensures the queen bee’s genetic diversity by preventing her from mating with the same male drone more than once.
The queen stores their sperm in a particular organ called the spermatheca and uses this stored sperm to fertilize all the eggs she lays for the rest of her life, which can be up to several years.
Blue-Footed Boobies
Blue-footed boobies perform an elaborate mating dance to attract a fit and healthy mate. During the dance, the male bobs his head up and down and lifts his feet, showing off his bright blue feet while making honking sounds and presenting small twigs and rocks to the female. The female will then lift her feet if she’s interested. The brighter the blue feet, the more attractive the mate.
Giraffes
Giraffes have complicated courtship behavior. The male giraffes drink the females’ urine to detect pheromones which helps them know if a female is ready to mate. If a female is ready to mate, the male giraffes engage in combat to win the right to mate with the female. They use their long necks to swing their heads and deliver powerful blows to their opponents. The battle winner gets to mate with the female, or if they are more than one female, the female of his choice.
Japanese Pufferfish
The Japanese pufferfish males, also known as Torafugu, spend up to a week building intricate sand designs on the ocean floor to attract a female. The designs are made by swimming in circular patterns on the seafloor and flapping fins. Once the design is complete, they swim to the center and vibrate their bodies, hoping to lure the female into the center. She will mate with him if she’s impressed with the design and the male’s dance.
Kangaroos
Before successfully mating, male kangaroos must prove their physical prowess to their potential mate. The males engage in a ritualistic boxing match with each other to win a female’s affection. They stand on their hind legs and use their powerful legs to kick and scratch during the fight. The stronger and more dominant male wins the right to mate and protect the female from rivals.
Mantis Shrimp

Spotted Hyenas
Spotted hyenas have a unique social structure where females dominate, and males work hard to gain their attention and favor. Before mating, males must bring food offerings to the females. Female hyenas have a pseudo-male private organ that they use during mating, which can make it difficult for males to mate with them successfully.
However, if a male successfully mates, he must retreat quickly to avoid attack by the female, who may become aggressive immediately after mating.
Praying Mantis
Male praying mantis perform mesmerizing courtship dances to attract females.
